Concerts I've Been To

Concerts I've Been To

Hello and Happy Monday. Today I am linking up with the Not Just a Mom monthly topic of Concerts.

After stumbling upon the party this morning I couldn’t resist the idea of listing out the concerts I’ve been to over the years.

My dad was the coolest! He took me to almost all the shows I wanted to see before I was old enough to go with friends. After I was older we still enjoyed going to a good concert but not so many hair bands anymore :)

Back in the early 80’s there was a local dirt track, the Weedsport Speedway, that held outdoor concerts. All the best bands would play there and we would go to multiple shows every summer. He didn’t care if it was Bon Jovi or Billy Joel he would have fun. He even took me to Aerosmith and Guns N Roses.

All the concerts in Weedsport were general seating and we would push our way as close to the stage as we could get. I was always aiming for the front row but sometimes there were so many people my feet wouldn’t touch the ground and we would get stuck where ever we ended up.

I saved most of my ticket stubs and have a bunch of photos but everything is currently in storage. I will try to find them and update the post as soon as I can.

So, it all started in the 80’s…

My very first concert was Bryan Adams at the NY State Fair. We also saw the Captain and Tennille at the free concert in Chevy Court. After that I was hooked and we started going to Weedsport and some BIG shows at the Syracuse War Memorial.

We saw Bon Jovi multiple times with different opening acts including Cinderella and Skid Row.

I went to Poison and Slaughter with my cousin. His dad dropped us off and just let us go. It was such a great time!

I really can’t remember some of them or the order I saw them so I will just list them out as I remember…

  • David Lee Roth …not Van Halen. This was after they split and he went to be “just a gigolo”

  • Gloria Estefan

  • Guns N Roses with Aerosmith

The first time we saw Billy Joel at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse there was a comedian as the opening act which was pretty cool.

As you can see my musical interests span quite the spectrum and it only gets crazier…

The 90s…

After I was older and could go without my dad I started to see some of the heavier bands like

  • Metal Church with Metallica

  • Damn Yankees and STYX … we won tickets to this show off the radio. 9th caller wins two tickets…who remembers hitting redial till you get through just to hear, “thanks, you’re caller number 8!”

  • Red Hot Chilli Peppers (I don’t really remember this one but I know I was there!)

  • Candlebox with The Mighty, Mighty Boss Tones

After my daughter was born, her dad and I started bringing her with us starting with Bush.

We lived in Michigan one summer and went to a bunch of free concerts including the Downtown Ho-Down at Heart Plaza. There was a list of bands at this show but I only remember The Kentucky Headhunters. I had a cup with the entire list but it’s washed away over the years.

We also saw White Zombie … not with our daughter. My ex and I got to meet the band and get their autographs at a record shop on 9 Mile Rd. and John R. Highway in Michigan then we went to the concert the next night. I can’t remember the name of the record shop but if I ever find the photos and tickets they will tell me.

A couple of years later we took her to Six Flags Darien Lake to see Christina Aguilera and she just reminded me that Destiny’s Child was the opening act. This one was definitely for her only. Hahahahaha

When she was older and taking piano lessons she wanted to see Alica Keys which was an AMAZING show!

Then I was given two free tickets to STYX and YES and made her come with me. STYX was awesome and she loved it but when YES started playing it wasn’t that great. About 20 minutes in she said is this still the same song? Do we have to stay for this? I looked around and about half of the people were leaving so we followed them out.

The 2000’s…

In 2007, my dad, my daughter, and I went to Nashville and had tickets to the Grand Ol’ Opry. There were a few different bands and the house bands but the only person I remember right now is Mark Chestnut.

That same year I found out that the Jonas Brothers were giving a free concert at a mall in Syracuse in the food court. Flashback to Tiffany in the 80s haha. We took her and her best friend to the show and then stood in line to get an autographed poster and a hug from Nick!

A couple of years later my dad and I took her and that same best friend to see them again at Darien Lake with Demi Lovato. I have to admit that I sat this one out haha. Dad and I went to see the Cirque De Solei shows and then went to wait in the car HAHA.

I have a thing for STYX and I went to see them one more time. This time they were the free concert at the NY State Fair and I couldn’t pass that up so we went to spend the day at The Fair.

One more free concert I was lucky enough to get into was REO Speedwagon at the Finger Lakes Racetrack. They were letting 4,000 people in and like 6,500 showed up. It was packed and they turned away about 2,000 people. It was so crazy and such a good show!

Then, finally, after all of these years, I went to see Motley Crue! AMAZING and definitely worth the wait. Poison was the opener they were even better now than they were back in the 80s. Such a great show!

My daughter and I went to see Billy Joel at the Carrier Dome. It’s the only place big enough for him to play and he usually sells out within a couple of hours. I can’t remember who the opener was this time.

Then a few years ago we were lucky enough to see Sir Paul McCartney, also at the Dome. That was definitely a show to remember!

That was the last live concert I went to. Ending on a good note right?!

Concerts I wish I could have gone to…

I would have to say #1 on my list is definitely Led Zeppelin and I would have loved to have seen Janis Joplin or the Doors live. I have a couple of friends that went to Woodstock, that would have been a very groovy time!

Concerts I would like to go to in the future…

I would like to go to see Elton John but I don’t know if he will be touring again after the pandemic other than that, I’m not even sure, we’ll have to see who comes around ;)
