3 Simple Tips for Successful Time Management

If you’re like most people, there doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day. With competing obligations pulling you from multiple directions, it may feel like you’ll never get everything done.

What if you could lessen that burden by taking advantage of a few quick, easy time management tips? Here are three such tips for you to try.

3 Time Management Tips

1. Set Time Limits

The first suggested way to manage your time better is to set time limits for tasks. By doing so, you turn the task into a game so to speak and whether you find it enjoyable or not, you know it’ll end at a predetermined point.

For example; if you’re a writer and you need to publish an article or compile a report, but maybe you don’t feel like writing that day. If you let your feelings stand in the way of your productivity, you’ll waste valuable time.

However, if you set a time limit for your writing for, say, one hour, you can dive in and make steady progress, knowing at the end of the hour it’ll be over.

Such a commitment is a far better use of your time than delaying it until later – when other responsibilities may get in the way, yet you still must write anyhow.

2. Spend The Right Amount Of Time Planning

This may sound silly at first…how can I save time by spending more time? Plus, how do you know if you’re spending too much time planning and therefore wasting more time?

Well, most people fall into one of two categories:

  • The first group loves planning. They can spend all day making lists, filling up calendars and filling pages of notes with ideas and plans to get things done.

  • The second group hates planning, forgets to do things, never makes lists and doesn’t even know how to find the calendar apps on their smartphones.

Both types can suffer from time management problems, but the solution is simple. Make sure you have a master to-do list every single day and follow only that.

Whether you over-plan or under-plan, commit to a ten-minute session at the end of each day to list the top things you need to accomplish the next day. Then, get them done.

3. Let Go Of Perfectionism

You may be wondering what perfectionism has to do with time management. But if you think about it, you can see how easily perfectionism can eat away your time.

Nobody is suggesting that you should produce low-quality work or leave things undone. However, you must know when something you’re working on is good enough.

There is a law of diminishing returns with issues of quality versus time.

Find ways to determine what is “good enough” to meet criteria for success, then move on.
