Free Printable Hogwarts Sorting Hat Ceremony
This week has been all about a Harry Potter-themed Party and what is more fun than a Sorting Hat Ceremony?
Even though this is a small part of the books/movies, it determines where the children will live while they’re at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In book one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the main characters are sorted into their Houses.
'Welcome to Hogwarts,' said Professor McGonagall. 'The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts.

Party games like this one do more than fill time. A ten-question quiz that gets read aloud, answered out loud, and then celebrated in front of a group is exactly the kind of low-pressure speaking practice that speech-language pathologists build into play. Start by having your party guests take the short quiz that’s included with the download.
If you want to add an element of surprise, score the quizzes yourself rather than having them score their own. Once you’ve determined each guest’s house, you’re ready for the sorting ceremony.
Write each guest’s name on their house certificate before starting the ceremony.
Next, place a stool or chair at the front of the room and play some Harry Potter music to help set the mood; Hedwig’s Theme is a great choice.
Setting the mood is half the ceremony, and that includes what the room smells like before anyone walks in. Set one out an hour before guests arrive, and the space feels ready.
Gather everyone together around the stool and select the first card. Call each guest up one at a time and place a sorting hat on their head. Announce which house they’re in and award them with a house certificate.
I know they don’t get certificates in the book/movie, but it’s a fun memory from the party they can take home and save.

SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND FOR PRINTING
A PRINTER
If you’re going to be printing in color, I really recommend investing in an HP Instant Ink compatible printer. The quality of the finished product is amazing! If you don’t need a color printer, I highly recommend a laser printer like the Brother L23 Series. You will save hundreds on ink. You can also get a color laser printer which I would LOVE to have!
PAPER
For everyday printables, planners, and coloring pages for the kiddos I normally use Hammermill Printer Paper, 20 Lb. I love that you can get a small box of 3 reams instead of having to buy one at a time or a whole case of 10.
If I want something a little nicer, I use this laser paper which is incredibly smooth and has very little to no ghosting on the other side. This is perfect if you like to use pens/markers that are prone to bleeding through to the other side.
For printing on A5 paper, I use this Blank 6-hole Punched A5 Paper. You can also get it without the holes but it’s $6-7 more. Which I think is odd because it’s usually the other way around and you have to pay more for the hole punching.
If you're printing a binder cover that you to be fade-resistant and last a long time, the best paper I would recommend using Epson Presentation paper. It's heavy like cardstock (48 lb), is great when laminated, and is made to last for decades.
