5 Simple Ways to Get Organized for the Season Ahead

5 Simple Ways to Get Organized for the Season Ahead

Summer has a way of throwing routines out the window. Between vacations, relaxed schedules, changing work routines, and simply enjoying the longer days, it's easy to look up and realize September is right around the corner.

The good news?

You don't need to completely reorganize your life to feel ready for the season ahead.

A simple planning reset can help you figure out what's coming, what needs your attention, and what you can let go of.

Whether you're heading back to school, returning to a busier work schedule, getting ready for fall activities, or simply trying to get your everyday routine back on track, a little planning now can make the transition much easier.

Here are five simple ways to get organized for the season ahead without overwhelming yourself.

1. Look at What's Coming

The first step is simply to look ahead.

Grab your planner, calendar, or whatever you use to keep track of your schedule and take a look at the next few weeks. You don't need to plan every day yet. Just start with the big picture.

Look for things like:

  • Appointments

  • Birthdays and special occasions

  • School or work schedules

  • Sports and activities

  • Upcoming events

  • Important deadlines

  • Travel plans

  • Bills and other regular commitments

  • Projects you've been putting off

Getting these things out of your head and onto paper can make your schedule feel much more manageable.

You may also notice that you have more going on than you realized—or that you actually have more free time than you thought. Either way, it's helpful to see everything in one place.

2. Get the Important Dates Out of Your Head

If you're anything like me, you probably have a running list of things you're trying to remember in your head.

Someone has a doctor's appointment next month. You need to schedule something. A bill is due. There's a birthday coming up. You promised you'd do something "next week."

And then you wonder why you can't remember why you walked into the kitchen. 😂

Your planner can take some of that mental load off your shoulders.

Write down the dates and information you know you'll need instead of relying on your memory to keep track of everything.

This doesn't have to be complicated.

Start with the things you know are important and add details as they come up.

The goal isn't to create a perfect calendar. It's simply to give your brain somewhere else to store all of those details.

3. Choose Your Priorities

Once you've looked at what's coming, it's tempting to make a giant list of everything you want to accomplish.

Don't.

Instead, ask yourself:

What actually needs my attention during this season?

Maybe it's getting everyone back into a school routine. Maybe it's preparing for a busy work season. Maybe you have a home project you've been wanting to finish. Or maybe your biggest priority is simply getting your everyday schedule under control.

Choose a few things that matter most right now.

You can still keep a list of other things you'd like to do, but they don't all need to become priorities at the same time.

One of the best things you can do when you're feeling overwhelmed is to stop asking, "How am I going to get everything done?" and start asking, "What needs to happen first?"

That small change can make a big difference.

4. Create a Simple Weekly Planning Routine

You don't need to spend an hour every Sunday creating a perfectly decorated planner spread.

You don't even have to plan on Sunday.

The best planning routine is the one you'll actually use.

Choose a day and time that works for you and spend a few minutes looking ahead at the upcoming week.

You might:

  1. Check your calendar for appointments and events.

  2. Add anything new that has come up.

  3. Choose your most important tasks or priorities.

  4. Look at anything that needs to be carried over from the previous week.

  5. Leave some room for the unexpected.

That last one is important.

Don't fill every available space in your schedule. Real life doesn't follow a perfectly organized calendar, and something will pop up unexpectedly or take longer than thought.

Give yourself some breathing room.

And if you miss a week? That's okay. Just start again next week.

Your planning routine is supposed to make your life easier—not become another thing you feel guilty about.

5. Don't Try to Fix Everything at Once

A new season can make you feel like you should start over completely.

New schedule.
New goals.
New routines.
New organization system.
New habits.
New everything.

But you don't have to change your entire life just because September is coming.

Sometimes the best reset is simply taking a few minutes to figure out what's already working and what isn't.

Maybe your current planner system works perfectly, and you just need to start using it regularly again.

Maybe your morning routine needs a small adjustment.

Maybe you need to stop putting six things on your daily to-do list when you realistically have time for three.

Or maybe you simply need to give yourself permission to let a few things go.

You don't have to do everything. You just need to know what matters right now.

A New Season Is a Great Time to Reset

The transition from summer into fall is a natural time to pause and look ahead. You don't need to have every detail figured out before September arrives.

Start small.

Look at your calendar. Write down the important dates. Choose your priorities. Create a planning routine that works for your actual life.

Then take it one week at a time.

And if your plans change? Your planner can change with you.

I'll be sharing more planning resources over the next few weeks, including the 2027 calendars and other tools to help you get a head start on the new year. So if you're someone who likes to plan ahead, be sure to check back soon!

For now, take a few minutes to look at the season ahead and ask yourself:

What do I need to make room for, and what can I let go of?

You might be surprised by how much easier everything feels once you have the answer.
