How to Plan for 2027: A Simple September–December Timeline
Every year around this time, I start seeing people ask the same question:
When should I start planning for the new year?
If you're already thinking about 2027 while we're still in 2026, you're not too early. But that doesn't mean you need to sit down and plan out every single day of next year either.
For me, the best time to start planning a new year is before January—but gradually.
You don't have to wait until December 31, and you don't have to have everything figured out months in advance. There is a nice middle ground where you can start getting organized and looking ahead without turning it into another giant project.
So, When Should You Start Planning for 2027?
I think September through December is a great time to start preparing for the new year.
Instead of treating new-year planning as one big task, break it into smaller pieces. Some things can be done months ahead, while others can wait until you're closer to January.
September: Start Looking Ahead
September is a great time to start gathering the information you already know:
Important appointments
Birthdays and anniversaries
School calendars
Vacations or travel plans
Holidays
Work schedules
Recurring events
Important deadlines
You don't need to make detailed plans yet. Just start collecting the dates.
This is also a good time to think about your planner or calendar setup for the coming year and decide what format will work best for you.
October: Start Setting Up Your Planner
By October, you may have a better idea of what 2027 is going to look like.
Start transferring the important information you've gathered into your new planner or yearly calendar. Put in birthdays, school vacations, holidays, appointments, trips, and other events you already know about.
Think of this as creating the skeleton of your year. Everything else can be added as you go.
November: Look at the Bigger Picture
Once you've added your known dates, take a step back and look at the year as a whole.
Are certain months already looking really busy? Do you have several trips or events close together? Are there projects or commitments that will require preparation?
This is where a year-at-a-glance calendar is especially helpful. Seeing all twelve months together can make busy seasons and scheduling conflicts much easier to spot.
You can adjust your plans now, while you still have plenty of time.
December: Finish the Details
By December, you don't need to be starting from scratch. You've already gathered your information and added the dates you know about.
Now you can start filling in things like:
Monthly goals
Projects
Seasonal plans
Home projects
Gift planning
Travel details
Work deadlines
Personal goals
December is also a good time to clean out your old planner and decide what information is actually worth carrying into the new year.
A new year is a great opportunity to simplify your planning system, too.
What If You Don't Want to Start Planning Yet?
That's completely fine.
If you're reading this in September and the thought of planning 2027 makes you want to hide your planner in a drawer, you don't have to do it yet. lol.
Some people love getting everything ready early. Others prefer to wait until December—or even January.
There is no perfect planning timeline. The important thing is to choose one that works for you.
Starting early simply gives you more time. It doesn't mean you have to do more.
What Should You Plan First?
If you're not sure where to begin, start with the information that is already known.
I like to think of it as the "things I know" list.
Dates I know: Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, appointments, school dates, vacations, and events.
Things I know are coming: Annual projects, recurring commitments, seasonal activities, work deadlines, and anything else you already expect.
Things I want to remember: Ideas, goals, plans, or things that don't have a specific date yet.
Once those are in your planner, you can add everything else as it becomes certain.
Don't Try to Plan the Entire Year at Once
This is probably my biggest piece of advice when it comes to planning a new year:
You don't have to plan all of 2027 in 2026.
You might know your daughter's school vacation is in February but not know what you're doing with that week yet. Put the vacation on the calendar and figure out the details later.
You might have a vacation planned for July but still be working out the details. Put the dates on the calendar and leave the rest for later.
Planning doesn't mean predicting everything that's going to happen. It's simply giving yourself a place to keep track of what you do know.
A Year-at-a-Glance Calendar Can Help
If you're starting to think about 2027, one of the easiest places to begin is with a Year-at-a-Glance calendar.
I recently created several free 2027 Year-at-a-Glance calendars that you can print and use however you like.
There are three different layouts:
One-page calendar: The entire year fits on one page for a simple, quick overview.
Two-page spread: The year is spread across two pages with lined space for appointments, events, and notes.
Landscape calendar: The entire year fits on one landscape page with a lined column along the side for extra writing space.
Each design is available with a Sunday or Monday start and in color or black & white.
The color versions also coordinate with my new 2027 Everything Planner, so they make a nice addition if you're getting your planner ready for next year.
Start When It Makes Sense for You
So, when should you start planning for 2027?
Whenever you're ready—but don't wait until January if you already know things that need to go on your calendar.
September is a great time to gather information. October is a good time to start setting up your planner. November gives you a chance to look at the bigger picture, and December can be used to finish things up.
But if you don't get around to any of that until December, that's okay, too.
The goal isn't to have a perfectly planned year before it even begins. It's to start January with enough information in front of you that you feel prepared for what's coming.
Start with what you know, add the rest as you go, and leave plenty of room for life to happen in between.
Happy Planning! ❤️
