Reading Challenge: 52 Prompts to Inspire Your Reading Life

Reading Challenge: 52 Prompts to Inspire Your Reading Life

If you love the idea of reading more but don’t love rigid rules or pressure-filled challenges, this one is for you.

I created this 52-prompt Reading Challenge as a gentle, flexible way to enjoy books throughout the year — one prompt per week, or at whatever pace feels good to you. There’s no finish line, no required genres, and no stress if life gets busy. This challenge is all about reading for joy.

Whether you’re a daily reader or someone who wants a little nudge to pick up a book more often, these prompts are designed to spark curiosity, help you branch out, and make reading feel cozy again.

What’s Included in the Reading Challenge

This free printable reading challenge includes 52 thoughtfully chosen prompts, giving you enough inspiration to last the entire year. Each prompt encourages a different type of reading experience — some reflective, some fun, and some meant to gently stretch you outside your usual habits.

You’ll find prompts like:

  • A book set in a small town

  • A book outside your usual genre

  • A book you read with a cozy drink

  • A book everyone seems to have read

  • A book set in the past

  • A “wildcard” pick — anything you want

Some prompts are seasonal, some are mood-based, and others focus on how you read, not just what you read. You can start anywhere, skip around, or repeat favorites — this challenge works around your reading life, not the other way around.

How to Use This Reading Challenge

There’s no “right” way to do this challenge, which is my favorite part.

You might:

  • Read one prompt per week and follow along all year

  • Pick a few prompts each month based on your mood

  • Use it alongside your planner or reading journal

  • Highlight or check off prompts as you go

If you like structure, this works beautifully as a weekly reading goal. If you prefer flexibility, treat it as a list of ideas to pull from whenever you’re stuck choosing your next book.

You can also pair this challenge with journaling — jot down thoughts, favorite quotes, or reflections after finishing a book tied to a prompt.

A Gentle Reminder About Reading Goals

This challenge isn’t about reading faster, reading more, or reading “better” books.

It’s about:

  • Enjoying the books you choose

  • Making space for reading in real life

  • Letting reading feel restful, not like another task

Some weeks you might fly through a book. Other weeks you might read a few pages and call it a win. Both count.

SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND FOR PRINTING

A PRINTER

If you’re going to be printing in color, I really recommend investing in a Canon Mega Tank Printer. The quality of the finished product is amazing! If you don’t need a color printer, I highly recommend a laser printer like the Brother L23 Series. You will save hundreds on ink. You can also get a color laser printer, which I would LOVE to have!

PAPER

For everyday printables, planners, and coloring pages for the kiddos, I normally use Hammermill Printer Paper, 20 Lb. I love that you can get a small box of 3 reams instead of having to buy one at a time or a whole case of 10.

If I want something a little nicer, I use this laser paper, which is incredibly smooth and has very little to no ghosting on the other side. This is perfect if you like to use pens/markers that are prone to bleeding through to the other side.

For printing on A5 paper, I use this Blank 6-Hole Punched A5 Paper. You can also get it without the holes, but it’s $6-7 more. Which I think is odd because it’s usually the other way around, and you have to pay more for the hole punching.
