How to Journal in 5 minutes a Day and the February Printable Prompts

Journaling is a wonderful practice that provides endless benefits, improving nearly every part of your life. But if you find it tedious or that you just don’t have the time, why not dedicate just 5 minutes a day to it?

Everyone has at least 5-10 minutes they can find in a day to write a few things down, then move on to the next task.

Here are a few tips to get you started

Start by Expressing Gratitude

A super quick exercise for your journal is to express gratitude. It only takes a couple of minutes. This can be your entire 5-minute journaling routine if you want.

However, if you want to add other thoughts as well, try adding a quick list of 3 things or people you are grateful for each day.

It gets your thoughts going and puts you into a positive headspace.

Try 5 Minutes of Stream of Consciousness

Another way for a quick 5-minute journaling session is to write in the stream-of-consciousness style.

What does this mean? With this style of writing, you are not choosing any single topic specifically. You write the first thing that comes to your mind, then write continuously for 5 minutes.

Your thoughts might bounce around to 10 different things before you’re done, and it might not make a lot of sense, but it is a great way to dump all those feelings and thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

List 3 Good Things and 3 Bad Things

For more of a quick list method, write down 3 good things on your mind and 3 of the more negative or stressful things on your mind.

This can be any 3 things, from 3 things recently you accomplished to 3 things you are grateful for today.

Then, you can write 3 of the more negative thoughts, like 3 issues, 3 people who have been stressing you out, or 3 things you have been slacking on a little in your personal or professional life.

Use Prompts

When you feel stuck, don’t waste time just trying to think of something to write about. Journaling prompts provide statements or questions that can get your mind thinking about a specific topic.

Instead of wasting time thinking about what to write, just choose a simple journal prompt, and write about what it’s asking.

I’ve listed 28 journaling prompts below. One for each day of the month. Take a minute to look through them and don’t skip over the ones that will bring out all the feelings. Those are the ones that will help you the most.

Choose ONE prompt each day and dedicate 5-10 minutes to writing your answer. If your time runs longer because you have a lot to write, it’s okay. Keep writing!

Be as creative as you like here…the sky’s the limit!

JOURNALING SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND

Even though you only need a pen and paper, here are some of my favorite journaling supplies if you want to check them out:

  • I like to use a few different notebooks for journaling but my favorite is this Leuchtturm1917 Softcover. I prefer the squared pages but you can also get the dot grid, lined, or blank formats.

  • If you would rather use a spiral binding, these notebooks are the best! I love that they come in a three-pack so I always have an extra one on hand. These are also a squared format but I think they are available in lined and dot-grid too.

  • To be honest, my go-to pen is a simple, classic black Bic but when I want something a little fancier I use either use these Muji Gel Pens or these Micron Sakura Pigma.

  • Get creative with your journaling and add some Washi Tape, Stickers, or if you’re artistic you can draw your own doodles.

  • Sometimes I like to add photos to my journaling and over the years I’ve tried a bunch of different printers. I started out using this Fujifilm Instax Mini but it wasn’t very practical to carry around all the time. Since the quality was so much better when I use my phone for pictures I decided to splurge on the Canon Ivy Mini Printer. It connects directly to my phone through the app and easily prints on 2x3 sticker photo paper that I can add right to my journal page instantly.

I hope today’s post inspires you to pick up your journal and start writing! Here are a few Everyday Journaling Prompts to get you started.
