If your home was ransacked by burglars or destroyed by a fire, would you be able to provide your insurance agent with itemized receipts for your more valuable possessions? For most people, the answer is no.

home inventory is simply a list of your personal possessions along with their estimated financial value.

Having an organized home inventory, also called a personal property inventory, will help you get the full value from your property insurance should a disaster ever befall your home.

You will need to set aside time for this project. Depending on the size of your home, you may be able to get this done in one afternoon — a simple room might take five minutes while a more complicated room might take up to an hour.

This project may seem overwhelming at first, but it’s really simple and you’ll be done before you know it.

Before you get started, I suggest that you contact your insurance agent to make sure what type of information is required under your current insurance policy and what is considered a “high-value” item.

SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED:

Taking Inventory

Choose a room, such as the living room, to begin and note down the major items you have there.

After each item note the year of purchase and the price. (if you don’t know the exact price, you’ll have to estimate)

Your inventory might look like this:

Next, take a picture or video of each section of the room, showing as many items as possible. You may want to take close up pictures of individual items listed on your inventory.

When you’re done with the steps listed above, move on to the next room. Be sure to check closets, hallways and even the bathroom for items you need to include on your list.

Don’t forget to check drawers, cabinets and any other hideaway spaces you may have stored something valuable.
