End of the Year Review Journaling Prompts

I know 2020 has been rough but let’s give it a proper sendoff and get ready to ring in the new year with a brand new outlook and a renewed hope.

This year I have two sets of journaling prompts for you to work through.

First, I listed the regular set of questions I ask myself every year.

Then, below that is a few more questions you can have some fun with.

So, grab a cup of your favorite warm drink and cozy up by the tree with your journal.

END OF YEAR REVIEW JOURNALING PROMPTS

  • 2020 in three words: What 3 words best describe your year so far? Create a mind-map and list as many words as you can think of to describe your year. Then choose the best three.

  • Most important people: Which people were most important to you this year and why? What can you do to show them how much they mean to you?

  • 5 things you’re grateful for this year: List at least 5 things that you are most grateful for this year.

  • Favorite memory: This might be a tough one but what was your favorite memory from 2020? I know you can think of something good that happened this year! For example, my daughter found out she is pregnant so not only did we get to celebrate that but we have something to look forward to in 2021.

  • Biggest accomplishment: What was your biggest accomplishment this year and how did you achieve it?

  • Biggest wins/successes: What were some big wins you had at work/home/school this year? What can you do to replicate or improve on that success in the future?

  • Biggest challenge: What was your biggest challenge or obstacle this year. Did you overcome it or are you still working through it?

  • Could have gone better: Write a summary of what you could have done better in all aspects of your life this year, and what can you do from this point on to improve them?

  • Progress towards your goals: Look back at your goals from the beginning of the year, which of those goals have you completed? Which goals did you not finish this year and what were the roadblocks that were in your way?

  • Your 2021 Goals: Do you still have goals from this year that you want to continue working on? What can you do to be more effective at completing them? Add these goals to your list for 2021. This is a great list of 8 Must-Read Books to Help You Achieve Your Goals

  • Unfinished business: What unfinished business do you need to take care of in order to start the year strong? Is there anything you can take care of before the month is over and cross it off your list?

  • New skills learned: What new skills did you learn this year? Did you take a business course or learn a new DIY technique? Whatever new skill you learned this year, give a short summary of what you learned, why you wanted to learn that skill and anything you want to remember about the training.

  • Money well spent: Did you make any big purchases this year? Where they worth it?

  • Good habits formed: Did you form any new good habits this year? What made you decide to start this new habit?

  • Bad habits broken: Were you able to kick any bad habits in 2020? How did you accomplish this? Do you have any bad habits you want to STOP doing in 2021?

A few more prompts to ponder…

  • Where would you like to travel to? This can be as complex as traveling to a different country or as simple as exploring a state park.

  • What new foods do you want to try? Do you want to perfect your sugar cookie recipe, make delicious smoothies, or explore bold cuisines?

  • Who would you like to bless in the New Year? Make a list of 3-7 people.

  • Think about the people you listed above. How will you bless each person on your list?

  • What books have you read over the last year that made an impact on your life?

  • Is there clutter in your home or office that you’d like to let go of? What could you donate that someone else might love and treasure? Here a list of 20 Things to do for a Decluttered Home Office.

  • Are you consuming negative content online and on social media? How could you limit your exposure to this content in the new year?

  • What charities or organizations would you like to donate to in the coming months if you are able? Think about how you’d like to donate. You can give your time, your energy, your money, or your skills. My mom has always donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital so whenever I have anything extra I send it to them. Even if it’s just $20, every little bit helps them take care of the children and their families.

  • Are there new routines you’d like to establish? Think about habits you’d like to replace with better healthier ones.

  • What books do you want to read in the New Year? I found this great list of 30 Books You Should Read in 2021 from Simply Stacie. She has some great suggestions if you’re looking for some ideas.

  • What brings you joy? How can you fit MORE of it into your daily life?

  • What one word would you choose to be your anchor for the upcoming year? What does living with this word look like to you? Here are some tips for Choosing Your Word and here are a few more tips on Connecting With Your Word of the Year.

JOURNALING SUPPLIES I RECOMMEND

Even though you only need a pen and paper, here are some of my favorite journaling supplies if you want to check them out:

  • I like to use a few different notebooks for journaling but my favorite is this Leuchtturm1917 Softcover. I prefer the squared pages but you can also get the dot grid, lined, or blank formats.

  • If you would rather use a spiral binding, these notebooks are the best! I love that they come in a three-pack so I always have an extra one on hand. These are also a squared format but I think they are available in lined and dot-grid too.

  • To be honest, my go-to pen is a simple, classic black Bic but when I want something a little fancier I use either use these Muji Gel Pens or these Micron Sakura Pigma.

  • Get creative with your journaling and add some Washi Tape, Stickers, or if you’re artistic you can draw your own doodles.

  • Sometimes I like to add photos to my journaling and over the years I’ve tried a bunch of different printers. I started out using this Fujifilm Instax Mini but it wasn’t very practical to carry around all the time. Since the quality was so much better when I use my phone for pictures I decided to splurge on the Canon Ivy Mini Printer. It connects directly to my phone through the app and easily prints on 2x3 sticker photo paper that I can add right to my journal page instantly.

I hope today’s post inspires you to pick up your journal and start writing! Here are a few Everyday Journaling Prompts to get you started.
